A Swiss family spent $34,000 and more than a year renovating what was a dead patch of grass in their backyard into a luxurious and eco-friendly swimming pond.
Reddit user VonBubenberg undertook the project with his sister and father, creating an oasis in the backyard that spills out of a stone-lined swimming area that measures about 26 feet long, six feet wide and five feet deep.
Complete with a solid filtration system, the freshwater is even home to plants and several fish, and stays clean and clear without the use of chemicals like chlorine.
The family designed the pond, ordered materials from Germany, and got their hands dirty in the construction by learning everything they needed from the internet.
Complete with a wooden deck wrapped around the water, VonBubenberg’s swimming pond is the stuff of relaxed summer dreams.
When VonBubenberg started the project with his dad and sister. Their backyard was a sad patch of dead grass, with the spray painted lines showing a clue of what was to come
The Swiss family hired an excavator to start digging up the dirt to create the swimming area, which measures about 26 feet long, six feet wide and five feet deep.
They set up the pipes that would circulate the water through a filter system held in the garage. The freshwater pond stays clean without the use of chemicals and is home to several fish
They had to lay down a layer of felt and a giant pond liner over it to seal the body of water. VonBubenberg said his father ordered all of the supplies from Germany
They created a rectangular swimming area with large stone bricks and laid smaller stones in the freeform pond area. VonBubenberg said he was ‘tired to death’ after a team of five men spent around 8 hours building the walls
The project took more than a year to complete, and the water froze over at one point in the winter. The family cat ventured onto the ice
A pump carries the water from the pond into the highest barrel in the garage. The water is slowly cleaned as it runs through each barrel filled with different materials like gravel and foam
In addition to the filtration system, the family also dumps an eco-friendly powder in the pond two to four times a year to fight off algae growth. Pictured, they installed lights in the pool so they can enjoy the incredible landscaping at night.
With the pond filled, finishing touches like the driftwood and fountain (far right) are added as the impressive transformation starts coming together
By the spring, the plants looked increasingly lush. Pictured right, the metal trestle built to support the wraparound deck
VonBubenberg posted the photos to imgur and reddit, with hundreds of commenters sharing their amazement. Reddit user DainBramage wrote: ‘At first it looked like someone was just too cheap to invest in a swimming pool. Then it turned into something way cooler and much more original than any pool. This is awesome!!!’
The pond’s filtration system also includes a UV-light to keep the water algae and bacteria-free. They even thought of a solution for possible flooding, creating outlets in the barrels to let the water run into the sewer system
The family cleans the barrels once every year, and use a water vacuum every three weeks to keep the waters clear
