When Steve Dempster took his wife and their 11 month old out for breakfast, they got more than they expected! No one needs to be abused because they order something different, but that’s exactly what happened at Weetons Cafe in Harrogate.
Steve’s wife ordered an omelette for herself and a smaller version for the youngster, who was just starting to try new food. The waitress asked why she did not just order two omelettes. Steve’s wife – who used to work there – knew that you could order off the menu if you asked for things, as she had done. She noticed that the manager, who seemed to be training a new server, was sniggering with the new girl, and so she asked to see the receipt.
“She ordered a breakfast for herself and a smaller omelette for our 11-month-old because he’s just started eating lots of different things,” Steve shared.
“The girl at the till said why don’t you just order a normal omelette and she explained that he wouldn’t eat it all so could she just have a smaller portion.”
“My wife used to work there and so she knows that if someone wants to order something off the menu you just put it through the till by typing it in a note to the chef.”
“At the time I think she was being served by the cafe manager who was training up a new member of staff.”
“They went to type the request in and my wife noticed that the other member of staff sniggered, so she asked for a copy of the receipt.”
“And they obviously weren’t aware this comment was included on the receipt,” Mr. Dempster added.
On the receipt the note read ‘Small egg and tomato omelette for the weird freak’. Steve was obviously furious as was his wife. Steve’s wife had her money refunded, and when the staff were quizzed as to why they had done that, they could not give an explanation. Steve made a point of saying that it was not as if his wife had made an unreasonable request, it was simply a request for a smaller portion, so that it would not be wasted.
“It’s not like she’s made some ridiculous demand, not least to say she was really upset and asked them ‘did I really deserve this treatment?,” Steve said.
“It’s utterly shocking that the cafe manager thinks they can do that in front of another member of staff and not think the customer will ever see it.”
Keren Shaw, the general manager agreed with Steve that the behaviour of the staff was disgusting and that they had acted in a very unprofessional way. He would be taking it up with the staff privately. The staff had not acted in the way that their customers had come to expect.
“Unfortunately today one of our staff acted in an incredibly unprofessional way and we are extremely sorry.”
“It is not the high level of service that we know our customers expect from us and which we expect from our staff.”
“We have made a direct apology to the customer concerned and will be taking up the matter internally with the staff involved.”
